The Students' Art Gallery at
Hotel
Dieu Hospital in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, was established by the
hospital in 1985 for the benefit of families whose children require
hospital treatment. The first of its kind in all of North America, the
gallery expanded several times during the first decade and is now
comprised of 150 pictures.
Eighty-five of the artworks are showcased in the Child Development
Centre near the main lobby, while 17 are in the Staff Library and 8 are
in the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department. Almost Home, a nearby guest
house for families whose children are being treated in Kingston
hospitals, exhibits 40 framed artworks.
New exhibitions are installed three times a year. Paintings, drawings
and multi-media constructions are submitted by elementary and
secondary schools in the
Limestone
District School Board and the
Algonquin
and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board. Contributors also
include
Albert
College Junior School and
Kingston Christian
School.
Approximately 50 000 people walk through the gallery every year!
